Two weeks ago, I held a private workshop for 75 professionals looking to land $200k – $500k+ job offers in tech.
On Friday, exactly 2 weeks and 1 day later, I received this message:

She wasn’t the only one. I’ve had 9 others message me telling me that they’ve landed interviews since the workshop as well.
So I want to break down the fundamental reason they are securing these interviews, and how you can, too.
It’s a concept called Demonstrating vs. Declaring.
And it has to do with how well your LinkedIn profile (and resume) is written.
Imagine this:
A VP of Program Management is hiring for a Principal PM. It pays $225k + $150k in equity + 25% bonus. It’s a significant investment for her to say the least. Which means, she’s only going to speak w/ the most qualified person.
She receives two messages from two equally qualified candidates who are interested in the role.
LinkedIn Profile #1
Headline reads: Expert PM | Wicked Smart | Mission Driven | Dynamic
About Section reads:
Dynamic Program Manager with extensive experience in fast-paced environments. Expert at leading programs for large organizations.
LinkedIn Profile #2
Headline reads:
Senior Program Manager with 7+ years | Delivered 25 enterprise programs | Managed budgets up to $15M | 97% success rate delivering ahead of schedule and under budget
About Section reads:
Senior Program Manager with 7+ years of experience leading $15M+ technology implementation and cloud migration programs for enterprise companies like Salesforce, Hulu, and Accenture.
Led teams of 50+ across four scrum teams, delivering 97% of projects ahead of schedule and under budget. Experienced in PMO governance, change management, and business transformation.
Who do you think gets the interview?
If you guessed Profile #2, you’re right.
Why?
The first person is [declaring] how good they are with fluff words that are not quantifiable.
What are fluff words? Expert / Dynamic / Mission Driven / Ninja / Guru
aka: words that do not mean anything to anyone.
The second person is [demonstrating] their impact.
In today’s competitive job market, the best opportunities don’t always go to the most qualified candidate.
They go to the person who knows how to clearly communicate their skills, experience, and results in a way that speaks to the company’s needs.
I constantly see qualified candidates lose out on awesome interviews for roles they would absolutely crush, all due to how poorly they are marketing themselves. They are talking about the things that they think someone would find interesting versus talking about what the reader actually cares about.
Don’t be like most people!
If your goal is to make it easier for yourself to land interviews for the roles you actually want, it’s not about working harder—it’s about marketing yourself better.
If you’d like to see examples of LinkedIn profiles and resumes that convert to interviews — I put together a free resource with pre-written resumes and LinkedIn profile templates to help you stand out.
