In today’s edition I want to share with you 3 Advanced Interview Questions vs. 3 Average Interview Questions that you can ask in your next interview (with a hiring manager) to help you identify a great leader.
Let’s jump into it:
🛑 Avg. Question: “What does a typical day look like in this role?”
✅ Advanced Question: If I were to start tomorrow, what problem would I be solving within the first 30 to 60 days?
– This is shows curiosity, is more specific and strategic
– Allows you to share how you have (and would) solve that problem
🛑 Avg. Question: “Are there opportunities for growth?”
✅ Advanced Question: Can you share an example of someone on your team who you’ve developed and promoted?
This gives you concrete information around what it’s like to:
– Work there
– Work for this hiring manager
– What it’s like to grow there, too
Bonus: If this hiring manager has never developed/promoted someone, then that’s a potential red flag.
🛑 Avg. Question: “What’s the culture like?”
✅ Advanced Question: “Can you share a few recent examples of ways you motivate and engage your team?”
– Another great question to help you understand what it’s like to work there and on that specific team
Here are 7 Bonus Questions You Can Also Ask:
Instead of asking the hiring manager, “what’s the culture like here?”, ask these 7 questions instead. Your intuition will tell you everything you need to know.
- How are successes and milestones celebrated on your team?
- What do you enjoy most about leading this team?
- How often do you share feedback with your employees?
- Can you share a recent example of how you handled feedback that was shared by someone that reported to you?
- What’s an example of something your employees are surprised to learn about you (and the company) after they start?
- What initiatives are set in place to encourage continuous learning and development for your team?
- Could you share a recent example of how you supported your employees professional (or personal) growth?
Final Thoughts:
Finding a job that pays you well is just one part of it.
But finding a great leader can literally change the entire trajectory of your life, not to mention, destroy those Sunday scaries.
