There’s a wrong way of trying to land $200k – $500k+ job offers…
and
…Then there’s a smarter way.
Let’s start with the wrong way first.
It usually starts with getting laid off.
Then fear kicks in. So…
– You put little-to-no thought into what you want next
– Instead, you immediately slap together a resume
– In it, you list out everything you’ve ever done
– Next, you begin applying to as many jobs as possible
– After that, you usually tell a few friends/past colleagues to keep you in mind
– Your inbox gets flooded with automated rejection emails
– Now the fear, doubt, and hopelessness gets amplified
– So you continue to apply to hundreds more jobs
– Luckily, you land an interview w/ a good org
– But you bomb that interview due to being rusty
– So you keep applying / keep landing interviews here and there
– But you keep bombing those, too (due to lack of repetitions)
– 6 mo later, desperation kicks in
– Then you do something worse:
* Begin applying to lower level jobs
* Aka jobs that you do not want
* You eventually land a job that you don’t want
* Which then sets you back for years to come
* And you become resentful
Time in the job market = 9 months – 1.5 years
Avg salary increase = $0 (and more realistically, you make less)
Now, let’s take a look at the smarter way.
– First you conduct an audit of your background/skills/goals
– Allowing you to get clear on where you want to take your career next
– Then you’re able to narrow your search down to one role (not many)
– Which allows you to write your resume to speak to that one role
– This resume includes data + quantifiable achievements (relevant to the one role)
– Next, you create a keyword optimized LinkedIn profile (ideally mirroring your resume)
* Which attracts the right Recruiters / Hiring Managers to it
– Now you spend less time spent on applying to jobs
– And more time spent on outreach (95%)
– You also prepare for interviews in advance
– Allowing you to crush your interviews
– Thus landing you an offer that you actually want
– One that pays you what you’re actually worth
– At a company you actually admire
– Doing work you actually enjoy
– And you finally get to celebrate
Time in the job market = Less than 90 days (on avg)
Avg salary increase = $53,590
If you had to choose, the smarter way seems like the more obvious choice, right?
So then why do most people choose not use it?
It’s because it’s not what we were taught.
It seems unknown. And the unknown is scary.
But there is a difference between good scary and bad scary.
Bad scary is something you intuitively know.
Good scary is something that requires you to learn, and when we’re in a crunch to find a new job — learning something new is the last thing most people want to do.
Learning something new requires your time, and it would seem counterintuitive to focus your time on something new that you have to learn.
This is where the old adage comes into play:
If you can master the smarter way, your job search begins to move with ease, flow, and grace.
The unknown route may seem difficult at first — but just like anything that was once difficult for you, it will get easier.
If you’re going through your job search now, or plan on going through it soon — I want to challenge you to try the smarter way. I want you to succeed.
