7 Questions to Help You Identify a Great Leader + Company Culture:

You know how they say: “Remember you’re interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you.”

Well here’s how to actually interview them.

Instead of asking the hiring manager, “what’s the culture like here?”, ask these 7 questions instead.

1. What were some qualities that the previous employee in this role brought to the job that you would love to see continued?

2. What is the biggest problem I can help you solve within the first 30 / 60 / 90 days of working here?

This gives you insight into their biggest bottlenecks and/or initiatives that are most crucial for them. You can then use this as an opportunity to address how you have solved for those in previous roles by inserting a strong STAR story.

It also tells you if their expectations are realistic or not.

3. When you were interviewing here, what would you have liked to know before you joined?

4. Can you share a recent example of how you handled feedback that was shared by someone that reported to you?

5. Could you share a recent example of how you supported your employees professional or personal growth?

If he/she can’t give you one, that’s a border-line red flag.

6. What do you enjoy most about leading this team? And how are successes/milestones celebrated on your team?

This gives you insight into how he/she helps their team shine vs. taking all the credit.

7. What’s an example of something your employees are surprised to learn about you after they start?

**BONUS for women who have only met with men **

8. I’ve noticed that I’ve only met with men during this process. They’ve been great, but may I also speak with a woman on the team (or cross-functional team) to get their perspective?

Finding a job that pays you well is just one part of it.

Finding a great leader/culture can literally change the entire trajectory of your life, not to mention destroy those ‘Sunday Scaries’.


Btw – I would reserve the questions above for Hiring Managers.

If you’re speaking with a Recruiter, here are the questions I would ask them instead.
