3 Things I’d Avoid Saying if I Were Interviewing Today:
1. Avoid coming across as desperate.
Instead of saying things like:
– I love this job
– I love the company
– I’ll do anything to succeed
Try saying:
“𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦, 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘫𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘵. 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘥𝘥 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯…(𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘱 𝘸/ 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦).”
2. Avoid praising yourself w/ generic cliches.
If it’s not quantifiable, it won’t hold any weight.
Instead of saying things like:
– I’m a fast learner
– I’m a dynamic individual
– I’m a mission-driven yada yada
Try saying:
“𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐’𝘷𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘯𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘵 — f𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘹𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦…(𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘱 𝘸/ 𝘢 𝘚𝘛𝘈𝘙 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺).”
3. Avoid speaking negatively about your past employer.
Even if you’re leaving a toxic environment, it doesn’t do any good to talk about it. Rather, you want to make it more about the new company and less about your past employer.
“𝘐’𝘮 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘴, 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘵𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘐 𝘢𝘥𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘦. 𝘏𝘢𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘵 3.5 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘐 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘟𝘠𝘡 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮/𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘈𝘉𝘊 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴.”
✍🏼 I’m curious, what’s 1 thing that’s helped you in an interview?

“All worthwhile things are hard at first, messy in the middle, and beautiful at the end. Keep going because you are likely closer than you think.”
