The job search is one of the most emotionally draining experiences you can go through, especially when you’re a high performer used to getting results.

I’ve been there myself earlier in my career. I’ve felt the anxiety, the frustration, the creeping self-doubt that makes you question your entire track record.

And now, after helping more than 800 senior-level professionals in tech navigate their job search, I can tell you with 100% certainty:

Even the most qualified candidates experience burnout. But it can be avoidable if you know how to manage your energy, your expectations, and your strategy.

Here are 3 ways I’d encourage you to do so:

1. Diversify Your Efforts (Stop Only Applying)

If you’re spending 80% of your job search energy on submitting online applications, you’re doing it wrong. Why? Because cold applying has a less than 2% conversion rate.

Instead, break your time into high-leverage activities:

Reach out directly to:

  • Former colleagues
  • Past managers and directors
  • Hiring managers at target companies
  • Recruiters working at companies you admire
  • Alumni from your school or bootcamp
  • People with similar backgrounds who’ve made moves you respect

How to do it:

  • Set a target: Reach out to 5 to 10  new people each day
(and if you miss a day – it’s not the end of the world)
  • Keep it personal: Reference shared history or context
  • Ask for a quick 15-minute conversation, not a job

Still apply occasionally, but make ‘intentional’ networking the main event.

This approach builds momentum and creates opportunities where you’re seen as a real person, not just a resume in a stack.

2. Manage Your Expectations (Like a Pro Athlete Would)

The job search is not about being perfect. It’s about staying consistent and strategic.

Think of it like baseball. The best hitters in the world bat .300, which means they fail 7 out of 10 times.

The same principle applies here.

  • You will get ignored.
  • You will hear “no.”
  • You will face silence after interviews.

That’s not failure. That’s the game.

For context:
When our clients send outbound messages on LinkedIn, they are ONLY looking for a 20% response rate. That means, they are literally expecting 8 out of 10 people to not respond. Again, that’s fine. Technically, 1 great conversation can change the trajectory of your entire job search (and even your career).

Set your expectations accordingly, and you’ll avoid the emotional crash that comes from mistaking normal rejection as a personal failure.

3. Carve Out Time for Yourself (On Purpose)

If you’re exhausted, anxious, or feeling numb during the job search, it’s likely because you haven’t given yourself enough space to recharge.

You are not a machine.

Build in “You” time every week:

  • Block out 30–60 minutes each day for something unrelated to your job search
  • Take 1–2 full days off each week from all job-related activity

Use that time to do things that refill your tank:

  • Go for a walk
  • Watch Family Guy (my favorite) or whatever your favorite show is to binge watch
  • Call a friend / Go grab a drink with them
  • Get in a small workout
  • Write, paint, cook, aka whatever works for you

It can feel counterintuitive to step away. You’ll tell yourself you’re losing time. You’re not.

The reality: showing up every day at 50% leads to mediocre outcomes.

Taking breaks gets you back to 100%.

Bonus: Build a Support System

This is a hard process. Don’t go through it alone.

Find a group of people who understand what you’re dealing with and who can normalize the ups and downs.

Try this:

  • Ask friends or peers who are job hunting if they want to do weekly check-ins
  • Join an online user group or job search Slack community
  • Participate in LinkedIn or Facebook groups focused on your industry or role

When you’re surrounded by people who are in it with you or who have already made it through you stay grounded. You stay motivated.

And you’re far less likely to burn out.

The job search doesn’t have to break you.

It can be one of the most empowering, strategic, and clarifying chapters of your career if you approach it the right way.

Stay sharp. Stay sane. And if you ever want help turning your search into a real strategy, you know where to find us.
